You've heard the expression, "dress for the job that you want - not for the one you have", right? Apply that logic to your LinkedIn profile (and all of your social profiles online). Your profile tagline should show a title related to what you want to do professionally, not just your current job title. I assume that you don't intend to continue being a clerk at a Vap store, right? I would recommend that you remove that sort of job experience from your profile entirely. Prospective employers in creative industries know you have to make ends meet, but they don't want to slog through a profile that forces them to read all about it.

If you don't have something that you can show as "current employment", then create an entry called "Schmuckatelli Productions" (or some-such) and include either the names of some of your freelance clients, or even add some brief project descriptions of the kinds personal projects that you have done for yourself. Mark it as "current". Do NOT mark it as "Self-Employed". That could be mistaken by some prospective clients/employers as "Not-Employed". It's sad, but true, that most employers like to hire people who are already employed. Also, remember to be honest. You're shining a positive light on things that you have actually done, not making up false entrees.

In most industries you want something that looks fairly professional, like a proper head shot meaning a close-up, high-resolution photo. Your eyes should never be covered, and the background should be fairly minimal and neutral (the interesting thing in the picture should be you). In creative industries you can either do a head shot, or you can go wild and put a piece of your art or a cartoon; the caveat being that it needs to be relatable and/or fun (no images of a cool part of gun you modeled in 3D).

Day 7 of my current streak, and 3rd day drawing from the Handy Art Reference Tool.
Using this app is really convenient, and as such, seductive to use.
However, I’m mildly concerned about the fact that even though these are
very well done 3D models there are some distortions and elongations that
might lead to some bad drawing habits if I continue using it. Maybe I’m
overthinking it. This page is a bit more than 35 minutes. I’m really
glad to be sketching regularly again. I can feel the old skills coming
back.
For anyone that isn't familiar, those are called "symbols". Each one has a specific purpose in the game, and each one has a value assigned to it. Like I said in the last post, I chose to use Mayan/Incan design language to help create a sense of time and place for the Stallion of the Sky slot game.

For the bonus symbol (the symbol that might get you to the bonus or free spins screen) I looked at the designs of specific Mayan pottery that some say is proof of ancient aliens. I like the mysterious nature of those pieces, so I wanted to include that look. Do an image search for "Mayan Aliens".

For this mid-pay symbol I wanted a piece of magic pottery that spat a combination of electric arcs and flame, so I combined Mayan pottery with a spark plug. The blue flame in this still version was replaced in the final version with animated electric flame.

Since I started working in this industry I've really enjoyed creating the letter art for the "Royals" in slot games. Although sometimes I start with a font, these were hand drawn from scratch and then painted digitally in Photoshop. I used some photo texture, but most of it was just painted.

for work and thought it would be a good idea to practice a bit before

Like many a 'comic geek turned professional artist' I was never all that great at drawing attractive women. It's something I have to work at. I'm gearing up for a comic project with an attractive female lead character, so I figured it was something I need to focus on in my sketchbook.

These are btwn 2 and 4 inches tall. My goal is to get the shapes down and not to get bogged down in details and perfection.
These are different versions of the same type of creature, one naked, one in a Biohazard suit made of biological material, and the other is one in human cloths after they settle on earth and integrate into human society. These were inked on Bristol with Microns and Sakura Pigma Brush Pens, and then colored in Photoshop.
I've done very little work for the print comic industry, but I've had some experience and I've had the distinct pleasure of being taught by some top comics professionals about the mainstream comics process of coloring comics and getting them to print.

Technology, method of delivery, and method of display (magazine wracks to digital displays) have always been a primary consideration when formatting and creating comics whether for print or digital. In this particular case I believe that good old print could be as good or better than their digital counterpart.
I've had the displeasure many times of having to display my work on various TVs and non-spec monitors in meeting rooms during game update meetings. I say displeasure because the art NEVER looks the same as it does on my game-spec monitor at my desk, and I'll have to remind the bosses that what they are seeing is not the right color, contrast, saturation, brightness, etc, and to please visit me at my desk for a proper viewing. (just to clarify, by bosses are really cool about it, I just hate to see my work looking washed out, too dark, discolored, etc.)

The point is that even in digital delivery of the final product an artist cannot predict exactly what the end user is going to see on various types of screens and devices. In comics, and really most media outside of the slot machine industry, artists don't have the luxury of being able to view (and tweak) the final art for every digital device that their art might be viewed on. And that is exactly why I think that print comics might still be able to be better products than their digital counter parts. Printers can provide color proofs, which artists can use to tweak their work for final print. You can never do that with every digital device that your comic might be viewed on.

Unfortunately it's my understanding that color artists in mainstream comics don't get a proof of the art prior to the final print run. My understanding is that due to anything from deadlines concerns to communication issues with the printers, The mainstream comics industry has yet to perform this type of quality check. Thesis here is that printed comics COULD be as good or better than the digital version is if the comics companies slowed down and involved the artist a little more in the final steps of producing the printed product.

Oh, yeah, and I love digital comics, but there's nothing like curling up with a real book. Yes, I'm middle aged, but for at least another 20 to 30 years my point of view and spending habits are still valid, so I say make the printed version a better product instead of writing it off as an outdated piece of technology.

Again, I'd love to hear any feedback from other fans and professionals.
For anyone who is interested, I posted a link to this on FB, and the few pros that have offered feedback have basically said that an artist proof would likely fix the problems with print, but that mainstream comics companies aren't likely to push for that because it would slow down the production process. So, it's money vs elevating the art form and money wins. Seems a little short sighted considering that raising that art form might actually boost sales in the long run. Oh, well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8619274771130118494.post-83322623398883471952013-01-24T19:33:00.001-05:002013-01-24T19:34:55.756-05:00Old Creature DesignsSince I'm unable to show any of the work that I've been doing professionally since April of last year, I've decided to break out some older stuff. This was done for a story and concept design I did while in grad school in 2009. It's an alien creature design for a somewhat comical story line.
Between my new job and renovations on the house I've been very very busy, and this blog suffered. I've done a massive amount of art that I can't show until the games come out, which may be as much as a year or so, but I have done some freelance that I can show. Here's a bit of that. I'll be posting some pics from my home renovation projects soon. I might create a new blog for that. I'm not sure. In the meantime, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm still here.

They are meant to be plays on the classic Atlas and Thinker icons. The Atlas is pretty straight forward, but I made some adjustments to the Thinker. I wanted the chest logo to be visible and I wanted him to be a little less... I don't know... "closed" or "guarded", like the classic sculpture is, so I moved both of his arms to represent a pensive yet confident and open pose. His method almost automatically yields sensitive variation between the lines that get color and the lines that don't. I went back in and tweaked it manually with a brush in the Layer Mask, but otherwise his method pretty much did this for me. The figure in the foreground is meant to be a little higher than the rest of the figures in the scene because he has just come out of a building and is standing on the front steps. The figures in the street would appear a little lower. Normally, I try to eyeball my perspective, but I just kept getting it wrong and having to erase over and over. I decided to try technical perspective, but that kept giving me results that were too precise. I couldn't force the perspective at all. Finally, I went with a mix of technical and freehand perspective, and I'm pretty happy with the final result. I think I may have found what I've been looking for.

These pencils are being done with a couple of different lead colors to help me keep the planes and elements clear. I've already been doing my panel layouts and some of my thumbnails with it, but now I want to move to doing my pencils there too. There are tons of advantages to doing so, but I'm not going to get into that right now.

Doing thumbnails and sketching in Manga Studio was definitely a little slower than paper at the start. I couldn't put my finger on why at first, but I think I've figured it out now. Using a pencil takes a very small amount of left brain (analytical) activity that most artists master when they're pretty young. So we're able to forget the tool and slip into the right brain (creative) activity that we so enjoy. Manga Studio and a computer are no different than drawing on paper except that there is much more left brain activity involved in the learning curve, which initially makes it much more difficult to tap into your creative centers. So a comic book thumbnail page that normally took me 15 minutes to an hour took me several hours in Manga Studio while hunting for quick keys and trying to figure out the best layer structure to use. As I got comfortable in the software environment my thumbnails started flowing out much faster. I'm almost to the point that I can do them as fast as on paper now.

So now I'm sketching in Manga Studio and not loving it at first. Same as before, there's a learning curve. After just a few hours I'm discovering things I really like about it. Using the pencil tool on a color layer gives you something like a transparent marker. You can be really loose at first and get some great marker-like effects and then tighten up with a smaller tip. I'm definitely liking it now. Hopefully, I'll get decent at it pretty quick, cause I'm going to pencil a small comic project with it in the coming weeks to test it out.

Inking? No. I would ink in Manga Studio if I was still going for a clean, "wet" look, but I'm moving in a direction with my inks that just can't be done in this software. Probably not any software. I like the alchemy of ink on rough paper and the happy accidents that happen. I wouldn't give that up right now.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8619274771130118494.post-66603522142340599052009-10-13T14:22:00.000-04:002009-10-13T14:28:54.945-04:0090 minute Challenge: Headless HorsemanOn a Shetland Pony! This was an in-class 90 minute illustration challenge. I wanted to try to have a cartoonish image in a gritty inking technique to see if I could pull that off. I'm not really sure if I did, but I had a lot of fun trying. I'm starting to feel like I'm getting some consistency in this new inking style. There's some similarities btwn this one and the ink drawing in my last post for example, but I've got a long way to go.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8619274771130118494.post-30167734685206313272009-09-18T14:39:00.000-04:002009-09-18T14:51:22.055-04:00Frontman InksHere's another inking experiment using the lead singer to a punkband for subject matter. I don't honestly know who this is. I found him on the net while doing an image search for "punk". A character I'm designing is supposed to have a similar build, so I thought I could get some great anatomy study out of this as well as inking. For the figure I started out with a small micron pen and then added some nice chunky line weights with a tiny angular/flat brush. I wanted this to be fast and energetic. For the background I used a flat bristle oil brush that separates easily when you use it for ink. I love the texture it gives. And finally I used white Holbein ink in a G-pen nib to bring some detail back and add some lighting effects. OH, and I used a white china marker on top of the white ink to give that grainy affect. This was really fun, and out of all the inking experiments I've done lately its the closest to what I'm envisioning for a comic project I'm trying out for.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8619274771130118494.post-84299621073689088092009-08-27T12:23:00.000-04:002009-08-27T12:27:11.496-04:00Another caricature inking experimentHere's another inking technique experiment.
